In the past hundred years, the pursuit of the fusion of tradition and modernity has been running through the career of Chinese designers. The famous designer in the world, Chinese architect i. m. Pei and Oriental traditional culture through modern architecture design from Xiangshan hotel organization form of courtyard space exploration and abstract interpretation of traditional Chinese architecture elements, to build on the traditional artistically Suzhou museum, and then to Japan at the art gallery into the simple natural ground environment consciousness. Oriental traditional culture is the spirit of the architectural design of inner clues and power source. In the new era, how to make traditions more vital, achieve creative transformation and innovative development? How to push forward traditional culture and modern design hand in hand?
For design, traditional "activation" has double meaning. On the one hand, people should respect the tradition and rediscover and re-understand it, so as to make the excellent traditional Chinese culture adapt to the contemporary culture and coordinate with the modern society by creative transformation. On the other hand, the strong vitality and profound social foundation of tradition itself make it influence the behavior and concept of designers and consumers all the time. If innovative development can be realized, it can provide more resources and power for Chinese design.
To "activate" tradition means to activate tradition. Here, tradition becomes the object of activation. How to make the tradition continue and adapt to the modern society and make the value of the tradition be recognized and accepted by people, becomes the main problem that designers need to consider. A group of designers in recent years in the rural practice constantly groping experience. For example, the Zhupeng Township Project in Jixi Shang Village in Anhui province, which won the Architectural Gold Award of the Asian Institute of Architects in 2019, strikes a balance between the protection of traditional villages and sustainable development.
Using local materials, the designer combined local traditional construction techniques with modern bamboo construction techniques and encouraged villagers to participate. On the basis of respecting the original spatial texture, the designer transformed a closed old house on the verge of being abandoned into a modern public space with multiple social functions. Among them, the collision of new and old materials and crafts, the superposition of traditional closed space and modern open space, are not only the activation of traditional space, but also the remodeling of the interpersonal relationship of traditional countryside with blood ties.
The modern facilities are hidden in the old houses, and the rural texture is in harmony with the modern lifestyle, which makes the village get new life. Starting from the restoration and construction of ancient village architecture and environment, the home stay, with tourism as the medium, endowing the space with new economic value by the attraction of homesickness. This approach avoids predatory damage to the natural environment and original ecological culture, and feeds villages with a virtuous business cycle, to explore a set of survival and development mechanisms suitable for ancient villages on the brink of extinction. Although it is important to protect and update the traditional crafts, materials and patterns, what is more important is how to transcend the forms and integrate the traditional way of life and the aesthetics of life into the contemporary society by means of design thinking.
