Yanchuan Budui Painting
The Yanchuan cloth pile painting in Shaanxi Province originated from the widely popular plucked flowers in the local folk, originally used as decorations on pillow tops, belly wraps, shoe uppers, shoulder pads, wallets, and cigarette bags. Its creative material is cotton textile cloth, dyed in various colours such as blue, red, yellow, white, and black. It takes folk legends, theatrical characters, folk life, flowers, birds, and animals as the theme, and uses pure folk composite modelling methods to patch, splice, inlay, stack, and sew, creating highly distinctive patterns. The images are mostly exaggerated and distorted, with vivid imagery and peculiar imagination, making them a masterpiece in Shaanxi.

Budui painting, also known as plucking flowers, laying flowers, or cloth stickers, has a long history and is a treasure in Yanchuan folk art. It originated from the daily life of the working people and evolved from women patching children's clothes. When children are in the stage of crawling or learning to walk, the knees of their pants and the elbows of their shirts are most easily worn out and require patching. Some clever and tidy women have developed a new idea for repairing holes, which is to cut patches into various shapes suitable for decoration according to the size of the hole, choose various colours of cloth that are suitable for matching, sew and embellish them, and achieve the effect of killing two birds with one stone. This approach has been spontaneously spread and inspired, expanding its application scope and gradually applied to shoulders, pockets, shawls, toe caps, and pants, forming a new decorative technique that is no longer limited to patching holes, and the pattern has also changed its name.
Most of the cloth pile paintings they create are based on traditional culture and folk legends, with common examples such as the qilin giving birth, the door god, the old man shining on the sparrow, the dragon prince, and the kitchen god; Represented by young and middle-aged authors such as Guo Rulin, Liu Jieqiong, and Gao Liping, most of them focus on real life as their theme, showcasing their strong feelings towards life. Their works have profound meanings and are full of the tension of life. I believe that with the progress of China's Western development, the ancient folk art of Yanchuan cloth pile painting will continue to be explored and developed, and it will also attract more Chinese and foreign friends to like and pay attention to this ancient folk art.

Based on traditional folk Paper Cuttings, embroidery, murals, and cloth pasting techniques, starting from life, using local materials, using cloth blocks of different colours, different textures, and different shapes, through cloth sewing and patchwork cloth decoration handicrafts, creating cloth stickers with embossed images. The so-called cloth sewing is a large-scale collage, including sticking blocks, stitching, inlaying, and splicing; The so-called patchwork is a small area of floral pattern embellishment, which involves pasting, sewing, and inlaying cloth pieces with fabric patterns on a piece of fabric

Fengwei gauze: It is a type of cotton fabric dyed with warp and weft, with a halo pattern in the shape of a strip. Its colour changes from light to dark, with a gradual effect. Fengwei gauze is a unique type of gauze in Beijing, as beautiful as the tail of a phoenix, so it is called Fengwei gauze; The use of phoenix tail yarn as a raw material enhances the silk embroidery process. Compared with other silk fabrics, it has richer colours, and using this phoenix tail yarn as a material has not been seen in other silk weaving techniques yet.

Yanchuan cloth pile painting is a folk art created by the people of Yanchuan through long-term labour and life. It has a wide range of mass and distinct regional characteristics and is a popular art form among the working people.
Budui painting, accompanied by cotton cloth, is a product of China's primitive labour form - men ploughing and women weaving. Its prototype originated from the daily needlework of rural aunties in northern Shaanxi. The Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi has high mountains and deep valleys, with harsh natural conditions. The clothes of the men who work outside all day wear out quickly; Naughty children climb trees uphill, often patching up one area and another. So, the clever aunties stacked and sewed thick layers of patchwork, forming irregular patterns over time, which not only beautified life but also durable and durable. In addition, aunts intentionally sew animal and flower patterns on their new clothes to convey their pursuit of a better life.
