From its independence from es koyama to its opening in Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture, pâtisserie Mitsuya is a pastry shop whose design begins with its name. Rather than starting from visual form, the brand’s identity was shaped by an interpretation of the name “Mitsuno.” Unlike the more common reading “Mitsuya,” the imagery of “a field of light” carries a poetic nuance, naturally evoking the scene of opening curtains at night to reveal a moonlit plain. This vision became the foundation of the logo design: a quietly floating full moon, symbolizing the shop’s aspiration to be a place that shines through the light of many people. One of the most charming details lies in the typography—within the word pâtisserie, the double “s” is subtly transformed into the shape of the owner’s signature glasses. It is a restrained yet memorable gesture, adding warmth and personality to an otherwise refined and rational layout.
The packaging for Mitsuya Roll, the shop’s signature product, continues this design philosophy by responding directly to the nature of the product itself. Filled with sweet red bean paste, the roll cake draws on Japanese sensibilities, leading to a package form inspired by furoshiki wrapping rather than conventional Western pastry boxes. The result is a rare and distinctive structure for a roll cake, where the act of unwrapping becomes part of the experience. The earthen wall–like graphic printed on the package echoes the material textures of the shop’s interior, allowing the memory of the space to extend beyond the storefront. Through this consistent approach—spanning logo, packaging, and interior—pâtisserie Mitsuya presents more than just pastries; it uses design to create a place that can be carried away and remembered.
