George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg founded their multidisciplinary design firm in 1980. The pair split their time between Toronto and New York, where they each maintain studios, and they own three homes—a residence in Bennington Heights, a Richard Meier–designed apartment in Manhattan’s West Village, and a beachfront retreat in Amagansett.

“There’s a certain magic to this house,” says Pushelberg. “It began as a tiny cottage and somehow unfolds into a series of layered vistas overlooking the valley.”

Most of these homes were acquired on impulse—their New York apartment, for instance, was purchased during a site visit while designing a restaurant on the building’s ground floor. The Toronto house was bought after a casual afternoon of house-hunting with a realtor friend. “We really hadn’t planned to buy anything,” Yabu recalls with a laugh, “but when we saw that beautiful home, we simply couldn’t resist.”

Nestled along a quiet street in Toronto’s northern Bennington Heights, the 1950s brick home carries a warm, understated charm. Set on a sloping lot and removed from the street, it appears modest at first glance—a simple single-story cottage—but unfolds dramatically toward the rear into three levels cascading down into a tree-lined ravine.

Inside, a warm neutral palette sets the stage for their museum-worthy collection of art, furniture, lighting, and objects. Though just minutes from downtown, the surrounding forested ravine makes it feel worlds away. “It’s only an eight-minute drive to our studio,” Yabu says, “but you’d think you were in northern Canada—there are deer, foxes, and an abundance of plant and bird life.”

Before moving in, the pair undertook a major renovation: restoring the façade, adding a new cedar roof, and preserving the original decorative steel railings. Inside, Yabu Pushelberg reimagined the space with wide-plank wood floors, warm white walls, and bespoke millwork crafted from rare Irish bog oak—its subtle gradations formed after 4,000 years submerged underwater.

“We’ve always believed that your studio should be a blank canvas, free from too much influence—but the spaces where you live and travel should be filled with things to touch, feel, and observe, so you can draw inspiration from them.”

They replaced the small rear windows with full-height glazing, framing the ravine beyond—fiery reds in autumn, and what Yabu calls the “fresh, sweet celery green” of spring. “What truly gives the house its character,” says Pushelberg, “are the furniture pieces and the art.”

这座房子陪伴他们二十余年。两间客卧常年迎来访客，空间也逐渐成为他们不断增长的收藏舞台。2020 年，他们根据新的生活方式进行了调整——将中层重新规划为一个专属的接待与娱乐空间。

The house has served them for over two decades. Two guest rooms regularly host friends, while the interiors have evolved into a canvas for their growing collection. In 2020, adapting to a new lifestyle, they reconfigured the middle level into a dedicated entertaining and social area.

“我们的朋友们都搬出去拥有了自己的家，”雅布笑着说，“我们发现自己几乎不再使用房子的三分之一。”于是，他们在一次 Zoom 会议间隙，勾勒出新的改造方案：拆除一间客房，将那层改造成可容纳百人的大客厅与酒吧。

“All our friends had grown up and moved into their own places,” Yabu laughs. “We realized we weren’t using nearly a third of the house.” During a Zoom call, he sketched out a plan: remove a bedroom and transform the level into a large lounge and bar capable of hosting a hundred guests.

Their home reflects a deep curiosity for objects and a respect for craftsmanship—never contrived, always sincere. Against the neutral backdrop, their collections sing: vibrant Yayoi Kusama paintings, vintage mirrors, and whimsical treasures from around the world. Each piece tells a story—like the saffron-hued rug from Marrakech that makes Pushelberg smile every morning, or the “forest animals” from Brazil and Japan gathered by the window, gazing over the ravine.

他们为 Ligne Roset、Avenue Road 等品牌设计的作品也以轮换方式陈列其间，让空间始终保持新鲜感。普谢尔伯格说：“这些收藏让我们的思维保持活力。”

Pieces they designed for brands such as Ligne Roset and Avenue Road rotate through the rooms, ensuring the space always feels alive. “These collections keep our minds fresh,” says Pushelberg.

“People often ask which home we love the most,” adds Yabu, “but really, each one expresses a part of who we are.”

Their collecting habits have never been limited to blue-chip art or design classics—they once went through a phase of obsessing over toasters, and lately, vintage cars. Their newest addition is a Mercedes affectionately nicknamed “Oskar.” “He’s German and a bit of an old gentleman,” Pushelberg jokes.

“We want the house to feel effortless,” says Yabu. “Sometimes you enter a place and sense everything was staged before you arrived. I prefer when guests feel so at ease they can just kick their feet up without asking.”

This, for them, is the true meaning of home: personal objects don’t define it, but they make it feel more like you. “The longer you live in a place—the more you adapt it, invite people in—the more it becomes part of you,” says Pushelberg. “To me, that’s what home really means.”
